Since 2008, 30 Fathom doormats has had the mission to re-use discarded rope from the commercial fishing industry and turn it into a unique, long lasting and beautiful product. Personally seeing all the discarded rope being sent to the landfill that still had much life in it, encouraged us to find another use for it and hence came the idea for doormats and other items made from recycled rope.
30 fathoms (180 feet give or take) of discarded fishing rope (mainly lobster and crab trap) goes into making each of our handwoven recycled doormats. We have been sourcing used rope from local fishermen since 2008, keeping thousands and thousands of pounds of used but useful rope out of the landfill each year. We sort the rope, clean it and hand-weave it into each of our unique doormats. We also return any useful parts of the trap line (gear) to the fishermen for re-use in their new gear set up, thereby keeping even more ‘trash’ out of landfills and offering a service back to the fishermen who help support us.
Colours of our recycled mats are determined by the type of rope that the fishermen are using at any particular time. We also offer a colorful variety of new rope mats and can custom-weave mats of different colours and sizes.
Our philosophy of recycle/re-use is shared with you in every ‘new-to-you’ doormat that we weave and we extend that philosophy to our new rope doormats which are colorfast, washable, rot and mildew resistant and unlike so many ‘throwaway’ products these days, are guaranteed to last a long, long time.
